§ Periyar National Park |
|
Spread across 777 sq. km, of which 360 sq. km is thick evergreen forest, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. Apart from Tigers, the other animals to be seen in the Periyar sanctuary are elephants, Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Dole or Indian Wild Dog, etc. |

§ Nilgiri Tahr |
|
The pachyderm population in Periyar is quite impressive with around 800 in number. The elephants are found in their natural surroundings. The gaur, wild pigs, sambar, barking deer, mouse deer, dhole (Indian wild dog) and tigers are found here. The Nilgiri tahr is also seen here rarely. |

Over 1965 flowering plants including 171 grass species. 143 species of orchids. The only South Indian conifer Podocarpus Wallichianus. |

Wild elephant, gaur, sambar deer and wild boar, Nilgir Tahr, lion tailed macaque, bonnet macaque, Malabar giant squirrel, flying squirrel, tiger, jungle cat, sloth bear, hornbill, stork, woodpecker, kingfisher, raptor, cormorant, grackle, darter, cobra, viper, krait, monitor lizards, frogs, toads, masheer, etc. |
