Leh, The capital of Ladakh since the 14th Century situated at an altitude of 11000 ft. The main attraction is the nine storey Leh Palace (Built by Singge Namgyal in 16th century) and Tsemo (Victory Peak) built by Tashi Namgyal. The other places of importance are the Sankar Monastery, Shanti Stupa Zoravar Fort etc. It is also the main business centre of Ladakh.

The landscape of the Suru valley is wonderful, especially when it gets dotted by flowers in the summer. It expands from Kargil town upto the Penzi La watershed, from where the Suru river rises. The Suru valley has a large population, mainly of Tibetan-Dard Muslims, who converted to Islam in the 15th century.

Kargil, the second town of Ladakh , is situated on the Suru River just short of its confluence with the Dras-shingo. Almost equidistant, at a little over 200-km from Leh, Srinagar, Padum in Zanskar and Skardu, the capital of Baltistan, it was in the old days the centre of a network of routes joining these places. Since Partition, Skardu has been lost to Ladakh, but Kargil remains the main staging-point between Srinagar and Leh, and the Gateway to the Suru valley and Zanskar.

The Hemis High Altitude National Park includes the catchments of two valleys, which drain into the River Indus. It is named after the famous monastery -- Hemis, and sprawls over 600-sq-km in the Markha And Rumbak valleys.
